    State Representative Mark S. Pafford

Mark S. Pafford is a State Representative for House District 86 which includes parts of Greenacres, Haverhill, Loxahatchee Groves, Royal Palm Beach, Wellington and West Palm  Beach.  First elected in 2008, and elected twice subsequently, Rep. Pafford has also been chosen to serve as a Deputy Minority Whip (2008-12) and Democratic Policy Chair (2012-14).

Rep. Pafford was born in rural Dade County, Florida on April 11, 1966.  Married to Tracy Pafford, he has two children-Audrey and Brendan.  A product of Florida’s public education system, he graduated from Florida International University in 1988 with a degree in Public Administration.

Early in his professional career, Rep. Pafford worked as an interpretative nature guide for  Metro-Dade Parks and Recreation.  This was the product of a lifelong love of Florida’s precious natural resources and has continued with his work as a member of the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee.  Rep. Pafford has also been a vocal advocate for Everglades preservation and restoration,  protection of  lands  vital to the endangered Florida panther and awareness of the dangers of sea level rise.

Over the years, Rep. Pafford has worked as a Congressional Aide for former U.S. Representative Larry Smith and as a legislative assistant to former State Representative Lois Frankel.  He has also worked at the local government level and for several area non-profits.  His interest in these areas was put to good use as he has served on a variety of House committees covering the areas of seniors, child welfare, healthcare, caregivers and local government.

During Rep. Pafford’s legislative career, he has sponsored numerous successful bills.  He has passed legislation that created cost-saving measures for special districts, closed a corporate documentary stamp tax loophole,  and created more opportunities for local governments to assist the homeless.  Rep. Pafford worked to pass a bill that removed the statute of limitations on sexual abuse of minors, allowing a child abused under the age of 16 the ability to seek justice and recourse later in life as an adult.

He also worked to pass legislation that makes it more difficult to use child pornography downloaded to “clouds” on the Internet.  Additionally, Rep. Pafford passed a bill that allows for better coordination between law enforcement agencies and state attorneys in regards to special task forces.   And after filing the bill three times, Rep. Pafford was able to pass a law that requires that affordable senior housing be a part of future growth management planning.
